A new situation has emerged regarding the next course of action for hunger-striking activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital. Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has written a letter to the hospital authorities seeking temporary permission to leave the hospital to participate in the ‘Sansad Chalo’ march towards Parliament.
In a letter written on Monday to the Director and Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, Sonam Wangchuk stated that his health is currently good and that his health indicators are also normal. Therefore, he has requested permission to temporarily leave the hospital to take part in the march.
In the letter, Sonam Wangchuk wrote, “Today I am feeling quite well and my health indicators also appear to be quite normal. Therefore, I request you to grant me permission to temporarily leave the hospital this morning to participate in the ‘Sansad Chalo’ march towards Parliament.”
Following this, Sonam Wangchuk posted the letter on social media platform X and raised questions about the restrictions on his movement at the hospital. According to his claim, if the police have stated that he has not been detained, then the reason for imposing restrictions on his movement should be made clear.
In a message posted from Sonam Wangchuk’s X handle it was written, “Sonam Wangchuk has made every possible effort to reach out to you all. He has informed that his health is good and has submitted a letter at the hospital, and it has been said that he has not been detained. Then why this restriction?”
Meanwhile, according to the health bulletin released by Safdarjung Hospital, Sonam Wangchuk’s vital signs are stable. However, it said that close medical monitoring of his blood-related parameters is still required.
The hospital authorities further stated that a multidisciplinary team of specialist doctors is continuing Sonam Wangchuk’s treatment and that his health is being constantly monitored.
It may be recalled that on the 21st day of his hunger strike, Delhi Police took Sonam Wangchuk from the protest site at Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital. Following this, his wife Geetanjali J. Angmo filed an appeal in the Delhi High Court challenging the medical arrangements and the restrictions imposed on his movement.
