Several community-based organisations, student bodies, intellectuals and social organisations organised a candlelight march in Daporijo of Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Subansiri district, demanding justice for Toter Gamkak, also known as Paksok, who was allegedly murdered by her former husband earlier this month.
According to reports, the incident took place on July 6 in Aalo, West Siang district. The protesters urged law enforcement agencies to expedite the investigation and ensure that the accused is brought to justice without delay.
Representatives of the participating organisations demanded strict punishment for the accused in accordance with the law. They stressed that crimes against women must be dealt with firmly and that justice should not be delayed.
The demonstrators also appealed to the state government and the investigating agencies to conduct a fair, transparent and time-bound investigation to ensure justice for the victim’s family.
The candlelight march was led by the Topo Welfare Society and witnessed participation from several organisations, including the Tator Welfare Society, Kara Welfare Society, Heche Welfare Society, Lodu Welfare Society, Galo Youth Organisation, Bogum Society, Galo Welfare Society and the Upper Subansiri District Galo Students’ Union. People from different sections of society also joined the march in solidarity with the victim.
The protest reflected growing public concern over crimes against women and called for swift legal action to ensure accountability in the case.
