Meghalaya plans to add eight new five‑star hotels at proposed locations including Shillong, Umiam, Sohra, New Shillong and Tura, Tourism Minister Timothy D Shira told MLA Rupert Momin during the Autumn Session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on 26 August.
The state currently has two operational five‑star hotels, both in Shillong. The eight proposed projects are part of a government push to expand tourism infrastructure beyond the capital.
The Tourism Department did not provide tourism revenue figures for 2022–23, 2023–24 and 2024–25, saying the data is still being collected.
New destinations have been identified based on land and water availability, electricity, approach roads, population, tourist footfall and proximity to existing attractions. Detailed project reports and tendering processes are underway.
Meghalaya had no five‑star hotels in 2020; it now has two operational properties and several premium projects in the pipeline, according to earlier government announcements.
