The High Court of Meghalaya has expressed dissatisfaction over the pace of investigation into the August 19 violence in Shillong.
The Court had responded to a status report submitted by the State government in compliance with its earlier order dated August 20.
Advocate General Amit Kumar informed the Division Bench of Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh about the steps taken, particularly the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct an expeditious probe into the circumstances leading to the incidents of August 19.
The cases registered in connection with vandalism and assault were produced before the court.
Observing the progress, the Bench remarked: “It is noticed that the investigation is going on, but apart from arrest of the office-bearers, there has been no further arrest made of the persons connected with the incidents.”
The court took particular note of the fact that two vehicles of the Meghalaya High Court, in which officers were present, were also attacked during the incidents. A PSO and a driver were among those assaulted.
Asking the state to produce the case diaries regarding the specific cases, the Bench made it clear that the same expeditious consideration must be given to all the cases, including the attack on a public transport bus.
The court listed the matter for September 1 for a fresh status report and production of the case diaries.
