Kwis Sumer of Muktapur village in East Jaiñtia Hills district, who had been reported missing since July 15, 2026 after travelling to Karnataka in search of employment, has been safely traced and brought back to Meghalaya on Monday following a sustained two-week search and coordination effort involving the Meghalaya Police, Karnataka Police and other stakeholders.
The matter was brought to the notice of the Government of Meghalaya following the submission of a formal memorandum on July 27, 2026.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, immediately took up the matter with the Government of Karnataka, facilitating interstate coordination and the mobilisation of the concerned agencies to trace Mr. Sumer.
A Meghalaya Police team, led by Lovish Garg, travelled to Bengaluru along with representatives of Sumer’s clan and undertook extensive coordination with senior officers of the Karnataka State Police, including the DGP and IGP, DIG(A) Iada Martin Marbaniang, and the concerned Superintendents of Police.
The team worked closely with the Karnataka Police to reconstruct Sumer’s last known movements and narrow down his possible location through technical and other investigative inputs.
A significant breakthrough was achieved when Sumer tried to establish contact with his family through social media with the assistance of Kavi Kumar, who had provided him shelter and support during his stay.
Quickly acting on this piece of information, the Meghalaya Police, in coordination with the Karnataka Police, successfully traced and located Sumer.
Sumer was subsequently found safe at Tiptur under Tumkur district, and taken into the care of the authorities. Necessary arrangements were then made for his safe return to Meghalaya, where he has now been reunited with his family.
Sumer was welcomed by his family and clan members in Shillong, and he will be taken to his home at Muktapur village.
Sumer expressed his gratitude to the Chief Minister for facilitating his safe return. The sentiment was also echoed by the clan members.
In a statement, Chief Minister said, “With the help of the Karnataka Police especially the Bangalore Police and the hard work of the Meghalaya Police and other stakeholders, we were able to find him. He is back safely to our State and I take this opportunity to once again thank all those who have played a role, most importantly the police in Bangalore and the Meghalaya Police who ensured that he was found and brought back safely to our State.”
The Office of the Chief Minister appreciated the Karnataka State Police for their prompt cooperation and continued assistance and the Meghalaya Police team for its dedicated efforts.
It also lauded civil society organisations and community stakeholders who extended valuable support during the search process; Dr. D. Rockyer L. Nonglait, who facilitated the initial communication with the Chief Minister’s Office; and Kavi Kumar, whose compassion and kindness in providing shelter and assistance to Sumer played an important role in ensuring his safety and enabling contact with his family.
