The Meghalaya High Court has fixed August 31 for examining the state government’s compliance with the recommendations of the Justice (Retd) BP Katakey Committee on the continuing problem of illegal coal mining in the state.
The matter relates to the committee’s 38th and 39th interim reports and had been deferred earlier due to the Bench’s non-availability.
The Meghalaya government had submitted a status report on July 6 in response to the 38th interim report. During Monday’s hearing, the state also placed a brief submission before the court concerning the committee’s 39th interim report, dated July 3.
Appearing for the state, Advocate General Amit Kumar, assisted by Government Advocate R Colney, apprised the court of the government’s response to the recommendations made by the committee.
The Advocate General sought additional time to submit a detailed report on the 39th interim report before the next hearing.
The High Court directed that the 38th and 39th interim reports, along with the respective status reports filed by the state government, be taken up together on August 31.
The court is expected to examine the government’s compliance with the committee’s recommendations and pass appropriate orders thereafter.
