Maruti Suzuki India has taken a major step toward sustainable manufacturing by commissioning a 300 kW green hydrogen electrolyser plant at its flagship manufacturing facility in Manesar, Haryana. This initiative marks the automaker’s first green hydrogen project and forms a crucial component of its long-term strategy to reduce fossil-fuel consumption across its industrial footprint. Designed as a pilot project, the plant will utilize surplus solar power generated at the Manesar site during non-operational days and holidays to run the electrolyser and produce green hydrogen. The generated hydrogen will be stored securely and subsequently blended with piped natural gas to serve as process fuel in various manufacturing operations, thereby significantly improving the utilization efficiency of renewable power that would otherwise go uncaptured. Based on operational insights and learnings gained from this pilot run, Maruti Suzuki plans to scale up green hydrogen adoption across its other major manufacturing plants situated in Haryana and Gujarat. This hydrogen project aligns with a comprehensive corporate push toward multiple renewable energy sources, encompassing solar power expansion, strategic power purchase agreements, battery storage development, and large-scale biogas initiatives. The automaker is already in advanced stages of setting up a 10-tonnes-per-day biogas plant at its upcoming Kharkhoda facility, where it has already commissioned a 1 MWh battery energy storage system to stabilize power supply. Furthermore, the company board has approved four dedicated compressed biogas projects with a financial outlay of ₹561 crore, supporting an overarching commitment announced earlier to invest ₹925 crore by FY31 into green-energy solutions. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki, emphasized that the company’s competitive position as a global manufacturing hub will increasingly depend not only on traditional factors like cost and build quality, but also on the overall carbon intensity of its production processes. Takeuchi highlighted that commissioning the green hydrogen plant directly supports the Government of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and reinforces Maruti Suzuki’s target to more than halve its manufacturing emissions. By integrating green hydrogen alongside expanded solar arrays, biogas generation, and advanced energy storage systems, the automaker is positioning itself as a leader in clean mobility manufacturing while creating a reliable, low-carbon operational blueprint for the broader Indian automotive industry.
