Hyundai Motor India MD and CEO Tarun Garg has called for a consistent, long-term policy framework to help India expand its automotive capabilities and accelerate the development of advanced technologies and components. Addressing the 66th Annual Session of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) on Wednesday, Garg urged the industry to move beyond exporting conventional components and focus on advanced technologies, engineering capabilities and innovation. He stressed the need to build domestic capabilities in critical areas such as semiconductor chips, EV battery cells and power electronics. According to Garg, while India has successfully developed scale in the automotive sector, its exports remain concentrated in relatively mature technologies, while imports are increasingly dominated by higher-value technologies that could shape the future of the industry. He called for greater self-reliance by strengthening the country’s ability to design, develop and manufacture future technologies domestically. Garg said a stable policy environment, combined with stronger industry capabilities, would be crucial for India to leapfrog into the next generation of automotive manufacturing and technology exports.
