Senior BJP leader and Meghalaya MLA A.L. Hek has expressed confidence that the party could win 25 to 30 seats in the 2028 Meghalaya Assembly elections and form a BJP-led government in the state.
Hek said the BJP has already identified constituencies where it sees strong electoral prospects and has begun conducting surveys to select suitable candidates.
“We have already identified the potential seats. Twenty-five to 30 seats are very potential for BJP in the upcoming 2028 election,” Hek said.
According to him, the party sees opportunities across the Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills. However, he stressed that the selection of candidates would play an important role in determining the final electoral outcome.
Hek said strengthening the BJP’s organisational structure remains the party’s main priority ahead of the elections. He said the organisation has a network extending from the booth level to constituencies and districts.
On the possibility of leaders from other parties joining the BJP, Hek said the party’s doors were open to anyone interested in joining.
He also dismissed reports of any leadership dispute within the Meghalaya BJP. According to Hek, the party’s central leadership would decide who would lead the government if the BJP succeeds in forming one after the 2028 polls.
He said seniority would not necessarily be the deciding factor. Instead, the party would look for a leader capable of uniting its members and providing strong governance.
On the current political situation in Meghalaya, Hek ruled out any BJP attempt to bring down the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.
“There is no question of toppling the government,” he said, adding that the BJP was prepared to work with any political party willing to work with it.
Hek further said the BJP would not object if a new entrant eventually emerged as the party’s chief ministerial candidate. The final decision, he said, would rest with the central leadership and would be based on the candidate’s suitability.
For now, he reiterated, the BJP’s primary focus is to expand and strengthen its organisation across Meghalaya and prepare thoroughly for the 2028 Assembly elections.
