Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday assured the Meghalaya Assembly and the people of the State that the Government has taken strong note of the violence during the KSU bike rally on August 19 and will leave no stone unturned to bring those responsible to justice.
In a suo motu statement the opening day of the Autumn Session, Sangma said the Government had acted swiftly and that those involved in the violence would be identified and prosecuted according to law.
He said the rally had been permitted after the KSU gave an undertaking that it would remain peaceful. However, violence during the rally resulted in stone-pelting on 31 vehicles and attacks on bystanders, leaving 18 people injured.
Sangma said 15 FIRs have been registered so far and five masked persons allegedly involved in attacks on Assam-registered vehicles have been identified, with one already arrested.
A Special Investigation Team headed by the IG, Law and Order, has been constituted to investigate the violence and ensure prosecution of those responsible.
He also said the road blockade between Assam and Meghalaya was lifted following a meeting between representatives of both States on August 22, restoring the movement of essential commodities.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Dr Mukul M Sangma called for strict action against all non-government actors responsible for disrupting essential services.
He said nobody had the right to hold the State to ransom and urged the Government to register FIRs against those responsible to ensure that such incidents do not set a precedent.
