Meghalaya is set to undertake a comprehensive ₹25-crore rejuvenation project for Shillong’s iconic Ward’s Lake (Nan Polok), with the twin objectives of restoring the water body’s ecological health while preserving its historic charm.
The state government will implement the initiative through two parallel projects—Cleaning of Ward’s Lake and Beautification of Ward’s Lake.
Commissioner and Secretary Vijay Kumar D said the Urban Affairs Department has already initiated the lake-cleaning component. The work will include de-silting, improving water quality, installation of a Lamella Clarifier, and the use of nano-bubble technology to enhance oxygen levels and revive the lake’s aquatic ecosystem. Officials expect noticeable improvement in water clarity within the next three months.
The Tourism Department will simultaneously undertake beautification works, including the renovation of pathways and pedestrian walkways, landscaping, decorative lighting, installation of street furniture, signage and other visitor amenities aimed at enhancing the overall experience for tourists and residents.
As part of the project, a new entrance gate is also under construction. However, the design has generated public debate, with several residents expressing concern over the use of hessian sheets and large iron panels that they believe obstruct the view of the lake and diminish its heritage appeal.
One of the key highlights of the project is the reconstruction of the lake’s iconic Japanese-style wooden bridge. Officials have assured that the bridge will retain its original architectural character and heritage value. Following clearance from the Forest Department, work on the beautification project is expected to commence shortly.
The Tourism Department has already prepared the Detailed Project Report (DPR), which seeks to strike a balance between environmental restoration, heritage conservation and the creation of modern public infrastructure while preserving the unique identity of Ward’s Lake.
The redevelopment comes amid growing public concern over the deteriorating condition of one of Shillong’s most popular tourist attractions.
Many residents have pointed out that the lake, once celebrated for its serene environment and lush gardens, has increasingly become a venue for fairs, exhibitions and government events, resulting in reduced green spaces and a decline in its peaceful atmosphere.
Visitors have also raised concerns over water pollution, inadequate maintenance and ageing infrastructure. Some have questioned the growing commercial use of the lake after its management was transferred from the Forest and Environment Department to the Tourism Department, arguing that frequent events have affected both its ecological balance and heritage significance.
With restoration work set to begin, citizens hope the project will revive Ward’s Lake as a clean, tranquil and heritage-rich destination while improving facilities for visitors.
