Three Children Die After Electrocution from Snapped High-Voltage Power Line in Meghalaya

Three children lost their lives after being electrocuted by a snapped 11 kV overhead power line in Umtangling village under Umroi in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district on Wednesday afternoon.

The tragic incident took place around 2 pm when the children were walking through the village. According to local residents, an 11 kV live electricity line had snapped and fallen onto the ground. Unaware of the danger, the children accidentally came into contact with the live wire and were electrocuted. All three died on the spot.

Describing the incident as heartbreaking, village headman Bok Nongbsap said two of the victims were siblings aged 11 and 12.

Nongbsap alleged that the village had repeatedly alerted the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) about a damaged transformer and deteriorating power lines in the area. However, he claimed that no corrective measures were taken despite the complaints.

The incident has triggered anger among villagers, who have demanded accountability and immediate action to prevent similar tragedies.
