The Tripura Police has constituted a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the mysterious death of former Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag, whose body was found at the State Police Headquarters in Agartala on July 20.
According to an order issued by the office of the Director General of Police, West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak will head the probe team. The other members are Additional Superintendent of Police (Urban) Dhruba Nath and Sub-Inspector Subhojit Deb, who has been investigating the unnatural death case.
The order authorises the SP (West) to induct additional officers from the Tripura Police Crime Branch or any other unit if required. It also permits the investigating team to seek technical assistance from the Cyber Crime Unit of the Crime Branch. The team has been directed to submit weekly progress reports to the Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) for review by the DGP.
Anurag’s body was discovered under mysterious circumstances inside the washroom attached to his official chamber at the State Police Headquarters in Agartala, triggering widespread speculation and demands for a transparent investigation.
The senior IPS officer was cremated with full state honours at his ancestral town of Baraut in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district on July 22. His son, Abhishek, performed the last rites in the presence of family members, senior police officers and hundreds of mourners. Before the cremation, the Uttar Pradesh Police accorded him a ceremonial guard of honour in recognition of his distinguished service.
Several dignitaries, including Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, Chief Minister Manik Saha, state ministers, Chief Secretary Jitendra Kumar Sinha, Home Secretary Abhishek Singh, acting DGP G.S. Rao, and senior civil and police officials had paid their last respects in Agartala.
Meanwhile, opposition parties, including the CPI(M), CPI and Congress, have demanded a judicial inquiry monitored by a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the death. The Left parties and the Congress have also organised separate protest rallies seeking a court-monitored probe.
A 1994-batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre, Anurag assumed charge as the state’s DGP on May 17, 2025, succeeding Amitabh Ranjan. Prior to his appointment as DGP, he served as Director General of Police (Intelligence) in Tripura.
