Amazon’s Alexa+ Debuts in India With AI-Powered Shopping and Services

Amazon has launched Alexa+, its generative AI-powered version of the Alexa voice assistant, in India with Early Access beginning Wednesday, offering support for English, Hindi and Hinglish. The service will be free for all users during the Early Access period and will remain free for Prime members thereafter, while other customers will require a separate subscription priced at Rs 2,000 per month unless they opt for an eligible Prime plan. Designed with Indian users in mind, Alexa+ can switch between English, Hindi and Hinglish during conversations and has been trained to understand Indian terms, family relationships, Bollywood, cricket, festivals and cultural references. The assistant can handle tasks such as managing calendars, sending emails, creating shopping lists, controlling smart-home devices, recommending meals and finding products on Amazon. It can also remember user preferences and information for use in future interactions. Amazon said Alexa+ supports services including Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, JioSaavn and Prime Video, with additional integrations planned with platforms such as Swiggy, EazyDiner, MakeMyTrip, District by Zomato, Home Triangle and TripAdvisor. The AI assistant also expands Alexa’s shopping capabilities, allowing users to search for products on Amazon.in, compare features, summarise verified reviews, refine searches through conversation and track prices. Amazon said its teams in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai contributed to adapting the technology for India, including speech recognition and language models capable of handling code-mixed Hinglish. More Indian languages are expected to be added in the future.
