Sonam Raghuvanshi, one of the prime accused in the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi, surrendered before a sessions court in Shillong after the Supreme Court revoked the bail granted to her in the sensational case.
Her surrender was carried out in compliance with the apex court’s directive, which set aside the earlier bail order and instructed her to appear before the trial court.
Raja Raghuvanshi, a businessman from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, had travelled to Meghalaya with his wife Sonam for their honeymoon soon after their marriage. The couple went missing during their visit to the state in May 2025, prompting an extensive search operation.
The case took a dramatic turn after Raja’s body was recovered from a deep gorge near Wei Sawdong Falls in the Sohra region of East Khasi Hills district. Following the discovery, Meghalaya Police constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the alleged murder.
Investigators have alleged that Sonam was part of a conspiracy to eliminate her husband during the honeymoon. She was subsequently arrested along with several other accused persons in connection with the case.
According to the prosecution, the murder was the result of a pre-planned conspiracy in which Sonam allegedly played a key role. The investigation has also examined the alleged involvement of her former partner and others accused of assisting in planning and carrying out the crime.
The case attracted nationwide attention because of the mysterious disappearance of the newly married couple and the allegation that the honeymoon had been used as a cover for a planned murder.
Although Sonam had earlier secured bail from a lower court, the order was challenged before the Supreme Court. The apex court later cancelled her bail and directed her to surrender before the Shillong sessions court.
Following her surrender, the court remanded Sonam to judicial custody. The murder case is currently pending before the Shillong court, where further legal proceedings will continue.
