FMCG leader Britannia Industries is keeping a vigilant eye on Reliance Consumer Products Limited’s (RCPL) entry into the competitive biscuit market following its initial product launch in Tamil Nadu, according to statements made by Rakshit Hargave, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Britannia Industries, during a recent earnings call with investors. Addressing investor inquiries regarding emerging market competition, Hargave emphasized that while the company is closely observing RCPL’s strategic moves, the fundamental dynamics of the biscuit sector differ significantly from other FMCG categories such as carbonated beverages. He noted that Britannia has already examined and thoroughly analyzed Reliance Consumer’s early product offerings entering the region. Highlighting a key structural distinction between market segments, Hargave pointed out that achieving the kind of drastic price disruption previously witnessed in the cola beverage industry presents a far greater challenge within the biscuit space, primarily because a substantial portion of the biscuit market already operates at tight, entry-level price points of ₹5 and ₹10. Because these fixed price tiers dominate high-volume consumer purchasing behavior across India, value engineering and price undercutting carry very different operational implications compared to liquid refreshment categories. As Reliance Consumer continues to build out its FMCG presence and expand distribution footprints across target regions, Britannia management confirmed that it will actively monitor competitive developments, consumer responses, and market dynamics to adapt its category strategy appropriately as market competition heats up.
