ANRKM Delegation Urges Union Shipping Minister to Absorb Long-Term Contract Workers in ALHW

A delegation from the Andaman Nicobar Rajya Karmachari Mahasangh (ANRKM) met the Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways to press for the absorption of long-term contract workers employed under the Andaman Lakshadweep Harbour Works (ALHW). The meeting, held in New Delhi, focused on the long-pending demand to regularize workers who have served for years under contractual arrangements.

The delegation was led by ANRKM representatives, accompanied by Mr. Jagdish, President of ALHW Karmachari Sangh, and Mr. Arogya Das, Secretary. They highlighted the plight of hundreds of contract workers who have been serving the organization for decades without job security or benefits equivalent to permanent staff. The delegation emphasized that these workers have been instrumental in maintaining and expanding port infrastructure across the islands, yet continue to face uncertainty regarding their future.

During the meeting, the Union Minister gave the delegation a patient hearing and assured them that the matter would be examined in detail. The Minister acknowledged the importance of ALHW in supporting the shipping and port infrastructure of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and noted that the contribution of long-term contract workers has been significant in sustaining operations.

ANRKM expressed gratitude to Mr. M. Vinod, a local leader who facilitated the meeting and ensured that the delegation’s concerns were effectively communicated to the Ministry. The organization reiterated that absorption of these workers into permanent roles is not only a matter of justice but also essential for strengthening the workforce of ALHW, which plays a critical role in the region’s maritime development.

The issue of contract worker absorption has been raised repeatedly in recent years, with unions and employee associations arguing that many of these workers have already completed service periods comparable to regular employees. They contend that denying them permanent status undermines morale and efficiency.

The Union Minister’s assurance has given hope to the workers, though the final decision will depend on policy considerations and administrative approvals. ANRKM has pledged to continue pursuing the matter until a resolution is achieved.

This development comes at a time when the central government is emphasizing infrastructure growth in the islands, including port modernization and shipping connectivity. Observers note that regularizing ALHW’s workforce could provide stability and efficiency in executing these ambitious projects.
