The annual Nongkrem dance, also known as Ka Pomblang Syiem, was performed with traditional fervour at Smit on Monday, drawing large crowds to the traditional palace of the Syiem of Hima Khyriem.
Altogether 237 unmarried Khasi women and 224 men participated in the traditional dances at the courtyard of the Iing Sad.
Adorned in traditional attire, the women performed graceful steps to the rhythmic beats of traditional music, while the men danced around them holding swords and white yak-hair whisks.
Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Art and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai, Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla and several MLAs and KHADC MDCs attended the celebration.
Syiem of Hima Khyriem Balajied Sing Syiem said the age-old rituals and dances remained unchanged, with prayers offered for peace, harmony and a bountiful harvest.
The five-day religious festival is observed to appease Ka Blei Synshar and seek blessings for prosperity.
