Workshop on “Tuna Value Addition” to strengthen the A&N Islands’ fisheries sector

On March 28, 2025, the Department of Fisheries will host a workshop on “Tuna Value Addition” at the Department of Industries’ conference hall, with technical assistance from the National Institute of Fisheries Post Harvest Technology and Training (NIFPHATT). The workshop is a component of the Government of India’s “Tuna Cluster Development in A&N Islands” initiative and is supported by the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), located in Hyderabad. The chief guest for the inaugural session will be Ms. Jyoti Kumari, IAS, Secretary (Fisheries).
The Indian government is launching a workshop to harness the tuna resource potential in the Andaman & Nicobar waters. The initiative aims to enhance the fisheries sector’s competitiveness, increase local incomes, and foster sustainable growth. The government has designated the Tuna Cluster in the region as part of its strategic focus on the fisheries sector. The workshop will cover technical sessions on tuna fisheries, value addition of seafood, financial support programs, and product development. It will also provide hands-on training on on-board handling of tuna.
The Indian government is promoting sustainable fisheries management by promoting eco-friendly harvesting and processing techniques. The NIFPHATT will provide training on post-harvest technologies, processing, packaging, and branding strategies to meet global standards. The workshop will also promote local entrepreneurship, empowering small-scale tuna fishers and processors to expand their reach. The collaboration between the government, local authorities, and national institutions aims to build a profitable tuna value chain, benefiting local communities and regional development.
