Wandoor & Humphreygunj, July 30: In a concerted effort to improve livestock health and reproductive efficiency, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS), Andaman and Nicobar Administration, in collaboration with ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI), organized a Veterinary Health-cum-Infertility Camp across villages under Wandoor and Humphreygunj Panchayats.
The camp addressed a critical issue affecting rural dairy farmers—infertility in cattle, which contributes significantly to economic losses and reduced milk yields. A total of 165 cattle were examined, with 28 animals screened specifically for infertility. Of these, 10 received targeted treatment for reproductive disorders, including hormonal and nutritional interventions.
Veterinary experts emphasized the importance of: Comprehensive reproductive care as a cornerstone of sustainable dairy farming.
Farmer education on estrous detection and herd management strategies.
The camp featured a multidisciplinary team including:
- Dr. Perumal P, Senior Scientist, ICAR-CIARI
- Dr. Lawhale Ninad Sahebrao, Senior Veterinary Officer
- Dr. Zachariah George, Subject Matter Specialist, Krishi Vigyan Kendra
- Staff from the Veterinary Dispensary, Manglutan
Their combined expertise ensured a holistic approach—integrating clinical services with farmer outreach to address both immediate and long-term livestock challenges.
This initiative reflects the AH&VS Department’s commitment to strengthening the livestock sector in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. By tackling infertility and promoting best practices, the department aims to boost farm incomes, ensure food security, and support rural livelihoods.
Further camps are planned to expand veterinary access across the islands, aligning with the Administration’s vision for sustainable agricultural development.
