Veterinary Health and Infertility Camps Enhance Cattle Productivity Across North & Middle Andaman

Sri Vijaya Puram, July 8, 2025 — In a strategic move to bolster livestock productivity and support rural livelihoods, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) has successfully conducted a series of Veterinary Health and Infertility Camps across North and Middle Andaman. The initiative, launched on June 16, 2025, aims to address reproductive challenges in cattle and promote sustainable farming practices.

As of July 5, a total of 27 camps have been organized, benefiting approximately 660 cattle across key locations including Diglipur (11 camps, 257 cattle), Nabagram (7 camps, 135 cattle), Webi (2 camps, 125 cattle), Billiground (2 camps, 31 cattle), Kadamtala (1 camp, 32 cattle), Sitanagar (3 camps, 61 cattle), and Rangat (2 camps, 17 cattle).

Veterinary teams provided on-site treatments for reproductive disorders, nutritional deficiencies, and general health issues. These interventions are designed to reduce production losses, improve fertility rates, and enhance milk yields. Farmers were educated on heat detection techniques, the importance of timely Artificial Insemination (AI), and the role of balanced nutrition in correcting negative energy balance — a common cause of infertility in cattle.

Interactive sessions facilitated knowledge transfer on modern animal husbandry practices, encouraging farmers to adopt scientifically backed methods to improve herd performance. Mineral mixture supplements and green fodder recommendations were also shared to support long-term cattle health.

The department has committed to expanding these camps to additional villages, ensuring that even remote communities have access to essential veterinary care and resources. This initiative reflects a broader effort to strengthen the region’s agricultural resilience and empower farmers through targeted livestock support.
