Union Cabinet Approves ₹3,626 Crore for Pune Metro Phase-2 Expansion

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, greenlighting two elevated corridors spanning 12.75 km at an estimated cost of ₹3,626.24 crore.

Chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Cabinet sanctioned the Vanaz–Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi–Wagholi (Corridor 2B) extensions as part of the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor under Phase-1. The project will feature 13 new stations and is expected to be completed within four years.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the cost will be equally shared by the central government, the Maharashtra government, and external bilateral or multilateral agencies. “This strategic expansion aligns with Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan and aims to bolster east–west mass transit,” he said.

The new corridors will connect key suburbs including Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi, and integrate with existing metro lines at the District Court Interchange Station. The project is also designed to link intercity bus services from Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahilya Nagar, and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, enhancing multimodal connectivity.

Officials project daily ridership on Line-2 to rise from 96,000 in 2027 to 3.49 lakh by 2057. The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will oversee implementation, with pre-construction activities already underway.
