Union Ayush Ministry Launches Scientific Yoga Protocols to Tackle NCD Crisis

In a move aimed at reshaping India’s healthcare landscape, the Union Ayush Ministry has launched a comprehensive “Yoga Protocol for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and Target Groups.” This initiative represents a significant push towards prioritizing preventive healthcare over treatment.

The protocol was officially launched by Union Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav during the recent Yoga Mahotsav 2026. Experts view this as a timely intervention to combat the growing burden of lifestyle diseases in the country.

Developed by the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Traditional Medicine (Yoga) (WHOCCIND 118) at the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, the protocols offer structured, evidence-based modules. These are designed to integrate Yogic practices into daily life in a simple, accessible, and scalable manner.

India is currently witnessing an alarming rise in non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular ailments, chronic respiratory conditions, and mental health disorders. An official source noted that recent estimates indicate these conditions account for nearly two-thirds of all deaths in the country, marking a clear epidemiological shift from infectious diseases to lifestyle-driven illnesses.

With the mounting burden of mortality attributed to NCDs, the need for preventive solutions has become urgent. The new yoga protocols, built on scientific evidence and clinical insights, address this need. Sources stated that the modules prescribe daily sessions ranging from 30 to 60 minutes, combining asanas, pranayama, meditation, and relaxation techniques. The approach is gradual and adaptable to suit different fitness levels and medical conditions.

Union Minister Jadhav emphasized the preventive potential of yoga, stating that “prevention is the future of healthcare, and yoga is India’s answer to the rising burden of lifestyle diseases.” He added, “Through these evidence-based protocols, we are empowering every citizen to take charge of their own health and well-being in a simple, accessible, and sustainable manner. By integrating yoga into daily life, we aim to shift the focus from illness to wellness, reducing long-term healthcare pressures.”

A key feature of this initiative is its targeted design, offering specific yoga interventions for major health conditions. For diabetes, the focus is on improving metabolic balance; for hypertension, on regulating blood pressure; and for bronchial asthma, on strengthening respiratory capacity.

The initiative also caters to specific target groups, including children, adolescents, the elderly, and pregnant women. Mental health is also a priority, with dedicated practices focused on reducing stress, anxiety, and depression.

Public health experts believe the initiative’s strength lies in its scalability. With minimal infrastructure requirements, the protocols can be implemented across various settings, including schools, workplaces, and community spaces. This initiative reinforces India’s position as a global leader in promoting yoga as a holistic health solution.
