UK intends to enhance its oversight of Google regarding search functionalities

The Competition and Markets Authority suggested facilitating user access to competing search services while enhancing transparency and control for publishers. On Tuesday, Britain’s competition regulator announced its proposal to grant Google “strategic market status,” which would enhance its authority over the operations of the US tech giant’s search services.

It also suggested facilitating user access to competing search services and enhancing transparency and control for publishers whose content is displayed in search results, should the designation proceed in October. Furthermore, it stated that Google should enhance the portability of its data to assist new businesses in launching innovative products in the market. Google will be the inaugural company designated since the regulator acquired new powers this year.

Google, which answers over 90% of British search enquiries, has provided enormous benefits, according to CMA Chief Executive Sarah Cardell. However, the regulator has discovered methods to make these marketplaces more inventive and competitive.

She stated that the CMA had outlined a plan for future measures against Google. “These focused and balanced actions would provide UK businesses and consumers with increased options and authority regarding their engagement with Google’s search services – in addition to fostering greater opportunities for innovation throughout the UK tech industry and the wider economy,”The CMA said it planned a further action to address more complex issues over a longer period, starting in 2026.
