Top Tamil Nadu Cop Arrested in Minor’s Abduction Case After Madras HC Order

In a dramatic turn of events, the Madras High Court on Monday ordered the immediate arrest of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) HM Jayaram for his alleged involvement in the abduction of a 16-year-old boy from Tiruvallur district. The directive came during a hearing on an anticipatory bail plea filed by KV Kuppam MLA “Poovai” Jagan Moorthy, who is also implicated in the case.
The case stems from a complaint filed by the boy’s mother, Lakshmi, who alleged that her elder son Dhanush (23) had married a woman named Vijaya Sri (21) against her family’s wishes. With the couple in hiding, the girl’s family allegedly abducted Dhanush’s younger brother, Indrachand (16), from their home on May 10. The boy was later found injured and abandoned near a hotel.
According to police reports, the abduction was carried out using ADGP Jayaram’s official vehicle, and he was allegedly accompanied by a former policewoman and a lawyer. Two suspects already in custody reportedly confessed to the officer’s involvement.
Justice P Velmurugan, presiding over the case, expressed strong disapproval of the conduct of both the MLA and the senior police officer. The judge criticized Moorthy for obstructing the investigation and warned that “no one is above the law.” He also condemned the use of political influence to shield suspects, noting that nearly 2,000 supporters had surrounded the MLA’s residence to prevent police questioning.
The court directed both the MLA and the ADGP to appear in person. Following their appearance, Jayaram was arrested outside the court premises, and the judge made it clear that public servants must be held accountable under the law.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for June 26, and emphasized that the investigation must proceed without interference. The MLA has not been granted anticipatory bail and has been instructed to cooperate fully with the inquiry.
