Thunderstorms, lightning are predicted across Andhra Pradesh for next 5 days

The India Meteorological Department issued a forecast on Friday warning of thunderstorms, which will be accompanied by lightning and strong winds in various regions of Andhra Pradesh over the next five days. As per the IMD, certain areas in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema are expected to experience gusty winds with speeds ranging from 40 to 50 kilometres per hour. A press release stated, “Thunderstorms with lightning are anticipated at isolated locations throughout NCAP, Yanam, SCAP, and Rayalaseema during the forecast period.”

The department has indicated that weather activity is anticipated to escalate from June 28 to July 1, with significant surface winds expected to impact SCAP and Rayalaseema. Additionally, coastal regions may encounter short periods of increased wind speeds.

The IMD has further noted that a low-pressure system situated over northern Odisha and the adjacent Gangetic West Bengal has diminished in intensity, indicating a change in the existing synoptic conditions. Moreover, a trough that stretches from the southeast Arabian Sea to Odisha, positioned between 4.5 and 5.8 kilometers above mean sea level, has now integrated with the weakened low-pressure system, thereby contributing to atmospheric instability. Additionally, the IMD observed that lower tropospheric winds from the southwest and west are currently dominant over Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, which are anticipated to increase moisture inflow and facilitate convective activity.
