The US is experiencing a surge in Covid-19 cases, with summer being particularly severe

Covid-19 cases are increasing across the US, with at least 25 states experiencing an increase in infections, with the largest increases in the South, Southeast, and West Coast. Despite overall Covid activity being low, the CDC has reported a rise in visits to emergency rooms in areas like the Pacific Northwest and Southeast, marking the start of a summer wave. The CDC reports that Covid-19 follows a twice-yearly pattern, peaking once in the summer and again in the winter. This pattern may continue due to the virus’s constant evolution, with the S1 region on the spike protein being a key part of the virus.

Covid-19 in the US: How severe is the surge?

The Nimbus Covid-19 variant has become the most common in the US, accounting for 43% of infections as of June 2025. Symptoms include a sore throat, congestion, fatigue, and fever. Most cases are mild to moderate. However, Nimbus carries genetic changes that may make it spread more easily or bypass immunity from past infections or vaccinations. The World Health Organization states the global risk from Nimbus is low, but due to its rapid global transmission, caution and information are advised.
