Suvendu Adhikari Calls for President’s Rule Ahead of Bengal Assembly Elections

Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal and a senior BJP leader, has called for the upcoming Bengal Assembly elections to be conducted under President’s Rule. His demand comes in the wake of recent violence in the Murshidabad district, which he claims highlights a breakdown of law and order under the current state government.
Adhikari has alleged that the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government has failed to maintain peace and protect citizens, accusing the state police of acting as “cadres” of the ruling party. He has also claimed that in areas where Hindus are in the minority, they are often prevented from voting, further emphasizing the need for central intervention to ensure free and fair elections.
The unrest in Murshidabad reportedly began with protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, which escalated into violent clashes, resulting in three deaths and several injuries. Hundreds of people have been displaced, with many seeking refuge in neighboring Malda district. The local administration has provided temporary shelter and food to those affected.
In response to the violence, the Calcutta High Court has ordered the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in the affected areas to restore order. Adhikari has also petitioned for a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the violence, labeling it as “anti-national activities.”
Reacting to Adhikari’s statements, senior TMC leaders have accused the BJP of stoking communal tensions for political gain. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced that her government will not implement the amended Waqf Act in the state and has assured that steps are being taken to restore normalcy.
The demand for President’s Rule has added to the already charged political atmosphere in West Bengal as the state prepares for Assembly elections scheduled for April-May next year. The situation remains tense, with both parties trading accusations and the central forces working to maintain peace in the violence-hit areas.
