Seven indigenous products from the A & N Islands are given a geographical indication label
Seven indigenous and distinctive goods have been awarded Geographical Indication (GI) tags, acknowledging their cultural and historic significance, marking an important milestone for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Hon. Prime Minister’s goal to honor the workmanship and legacy of old tribal communities is in line with this effort. The products awarded Gl tags are: 1)Nicobari Mat (Chatrai-hileuoi), 2)Nicobari Hut (To Chanvi Pati – Nyi hupul), 3)Nicobari Hodi, 4)Padauk Wood Craft, 5)Andaman & Nicobar Coconut, 6)Nicobari Tavi-i-Ngaich (Virgin Coconut Oil), 7)Andaman Karen Musley Rice.
This effort was led by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) in partnership with important stakeholders as an homage to the Islands’ tribal communities. Earlier this year, in April 2024, the trip was blessed by the Honorable Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The combined efforts of applicants, including the Centre for Participatory Training and Learning, Sahara Women’s Marketing Cooperative Society Ltd., Tribal Development Council, and Tribals Development Cooperative Society Ltd., made this accomplishment possible.
The Human Welfare Association oversaw the procedure with the help of Padma recipient Mr. Rajani Kant, popularly referred to as “the GI Man of India.” The A & N Administration’s steadfast assistance during the process was acknowledged by NABARD. In addition to granting these objects intellectual property rights, the Gl tags preserve the rich cultural legacy of the Karen and Nicobarese populations. It is anticipated that this recognition will increase these distinctive items’ visibility and raise their value in both domestic and international markets.
