Rakesh Roshan told even choreographers and directors demand vanity vans today: ‘If you need one on set all the time, why would you…’

In a recent podcast, filmmaker Rakesh Roshan spoke about visuals dominating Bollywood films more than storytelling today.
Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan recently spoke about the evolution of the film industry. While he spoke about the changes in the filmmaking process and how things have become easier, he also expressed concern over the strong visual narratives dominating the film market today.
During a podcast with Pinkvilla, Rakesh Roshan spoke about the vanity van culture in Bollywood, which increased the production costs of films, even leading to excessive use of green screens and VFX, which make films look unbelievable.
He said, “The makeup rooms in our studios were not of the level they used to be earlier. The makeup rooms used to be very good at that time. But then we started making vanity vans for the lead actors. Now even though make-up rooms have improved, vanity vans are so in vogue that you have to provide vanity vans for actors, directors, choreographers, stunt directors etc.
People who are on the set 24 hours a day, they also need vanity vans now and I don’t understand why this happens.” Talking about some of the major changes in the filmmaking process, Rakesh Roshan said, “We have improved 100 per cent in every way, new cameras have been very helpful, new techniques, green screens etc make things easier.
We never used VFX or green screens in Karan Arjun, Khoon Bhari Maang etc. Horses used to fall for real, but there is a thrill in that kind of filmmaking. Today whatever you visualise, you can put it on screen as well.
But today visualisations are taking over the story, it just becomes too much. A hero is shown fighting 100 people, it looks a bit artificial. Even though my stories were unbelievable, when I made them into a film they looked believable.”
