Pope Francis Passes Away at 88, Leaving a Legacy of Compassion and Reform

Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, has passed away at the age of 88, just a day after celebrating Easter. The Vatican confirmed his death in a statement on April 21, 2025, announcing that he died at his residence in Casa Santa Marta.

The Pope had been battling double pneumonia and was in critical condition at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital before returning to the Vatican to continue his recovery. Despite his health struggles, he made a surprise appearance on Easter Sunday, greeting thousands of faithful in St. Peter’s Square from his Popemobile.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was the first Jesuit Pope and the first to adopt the name Francis, inspired by St. Francis of Assisi. His papacy was marked by humility, social justice advocacy, and environmental activism. He championed the rights of the poor, called for reforms within the Church, and emphasized inclusivity.

World leaders and religious figures have expressed condolences, praising Pope Francis for his commitment to justice, reconciliation, and compassion. His passing marks the end of a transformative era for the Catholic Church.
