Nicobar District Administration Comes Up With Strategies To Control Mealy Bug

The spread of Mealy Bug and Rugose Spiralling Whitefly in coconut, fruits, and vegetables has been increasingly observed in several villages of Car Nicobar. In response, awareness campaigns are being conducted throughout the region, aiming to educate farmers on recognizing symptoms, understanding pest infestations, and adopting effective control measures for these pests affecting plantations.

A joint effort by the District Administration, Tribal Council, Agriculture Department, CIPMC, and KVK-CIARI has led to the formulation of both short-term and long-term strategies, emphasizing eco-friendly and biological pest control methods. Farmers are being encouraged to adopt cultural practices like forced water spraying, proper plant spacing, routine inspections, pruning, and good field hygiene. Additionally, the use of organic pesticides is being promoted to prevent further spread.

In heavily affected villages such as Perka and Malacca, teams from KVK and agriculture departments have applied Neem-based pesticides. Village headmen have been briefed about the situation and instructed to monitor their areas closely and report any pest sightings to Krishi Vigyan Kendra or the Agriculture Department.
