MP advocates free or reimbursable transport for inter-island patients needing treatment at GB Pant Hospital

Hon’ble Member of Parliament Bishnu Pada Ray has urged the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Administration to introduce a free or reimbursable transportation scheme for patients from remote inter-island regions who require emergency or specialized medical treatment at GB Pant Hospital.

In a formal letter addressed to the Hon’ble Lt. Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Mr. Ray highlighted the significant financial burden faced by economically weaker patients who must travel long distances—often via helicopter or ship—to receive advanced medical care in the capital. Copies of the letter were also sent to the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Union Home Minister, and Health & Family Welfare Minister, seeking their support for the proposed scheme.

During his recent visits to isolated island communities, Mr. Ray encountered several families struggling with the cost of emergency transportation, as well as expenses for accompanying attendants. “This financial burden is pushing many vulnerable families into distress,” he said, stress.

Mr. Ray pointed out that under schemes like Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) and its predecessor ANIISHI, patients referred to mainland hospitals are eligible for reimbursement of travel expenses for both themselves and an attendant. He emphasized the need for similar provisions within the Union Territory, given GB Pant Hospital’s central role in providing advanced healthcare to island residents.

Citing unique geographical challenges, the MP advocated for a dedicated policy ensuring cost-free or subsidized transport for patients requiring urgent referrals.
