Monsoon mayhem: 20 d*ad as rains cause widespread landslides in Darjeeling, Mirik

Devastating landslides and flash floods caused by unrelenting torrential rainfall in North Bengal’s Mirik and Darjeeling hills killed at least 20 people, including multiple children, and injured many more. Hundreds of tourists were left stranded amid extensive destruction after the disaster, which was caused by more than 300 mm of rain in 12 hours, washed away residences and damaged important road connections. Casualties were recorded from a number of areas, including Sarsaly, Jasbirgaon, Mirik Basti, Dhar Gaon (Mechi), Nagrakata, and the area around Mirik Lake, according to reports from the district government and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

The worst-hit locality, Mirik, had 11 fatalities, according to the NDRF, while seven injured people were pulled from the wreckage. As rescue and search activities in Darjeeling continued late into the night with coordinated efforts from police, local government, and emergency response organizations, seven more people were killed. In the Darjeeling subdivision, a significant landslide caused by persistent rain since last night has resulted in seven reported fatalities. Relief and rescue efforts are in progress,” stated Richard Lepcha, the SDO for Darjeeling.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has declared North Bengal’s situation “grave” and plans to visit affected districts to assess damage and coordinate relief measures. The torrential rainfall caused severe flooding and landslides, similar to recent Kolkata flooding. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief and assured assistance to the affected people. President Droupadi Murmu also expressed condolences for the tragic loss of lives in Darjeeling, West Bengal.
