MNRE approved 436 separate grid-connected solar pumps and 34 standalone solar pumps

For the fiscal year 2024–2025, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has approved 436 separate grid-connected solar pumps and 34 standalone solar pumps under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) program for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Launched in March 2019, the program seeks to increase farmers’ revenue by encouraging the use of solar energy while reducing the agricultural sector’s reliance on fuel.

The Andaman and Nicobar Administration’s Electricity Department will carry out the plan, emphasizing two main elements: This component will let farmers in off-grid locations replace their current diesel agricultural pumps with standalone solar agricultural pumps. Small and marginal farmers, particularly those who use micro-irrigation systems, will be given priority.

Pump Capacity: In accordance with MNRE regulations, the solar PV capacity in kW will be limited based on the pump capacity in HP. A 3 HP pump, for example, can have a 3 kW solar capacity.

Financial Assistance: As with Component B, CFA will cover 50% of the benchmark or tender cost. Farmers will pay 20% of the total cost, and they can choose to finance themselves or get a bank loan. Subject to approval, a 30% subsidy from the Union Territory (UT) Administration is also anticipated to be announced.
