Man detained in Jorethang due to minor’s pregnancy
The Station House Officer of the Melli Police Station sent a police radiogram on May 3, 2024, at around 2100 hours. The letter described a 13-year-old girl who had come to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Melli complaining of amenorrhea. After examination, a urine pregnancy test (UPT) was performed; the outcome was affirmative. The young girl was escorted by a Manpur, South Sikkim, native. According to reports, the accused has been the minor victim’s housemate for the previous 1.5 years. At Jorethang Police Station, the little victim was later examined. To submit a formal complaint, the series of events leading up to her pregnancy could not be conclusively proven. The youngster was referred to the youngster Welfare Committee in Namchi for counseling and more testing since she was emotionally exhausted from the late hour.
Later, the CWC Namchi District Chairperson, Kalden Zangmo Bhutia, and other members submitted a written report. The little girl revealed to them throughout their conversation that she was living with the accused, whom she referred to as her husband. Since April 2023, she had been living with him at Manpur, Kitam, close to a beer plant. On May 3, 2024, the victim went to Melli PHC, where it was determined that she is three months pregnant. The location of the incident was determined to be Manpur Kitam. As a result, a case was opened using the previously provided data.
The minor child has been admitted to a shelter home in Namchi run by CWC, Namchi, after the case was brought to the attention of the district child protection officer in Namchi during the course of the investigation. The situation is presently being investigated, and the accused has been taken into custody.The Jorethang Police Station received the case registration.
