Lopar formed over the Bay of Bengal North Andaman Sea, possibility of heavy rain

A low-pressure region emerged over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea early on Monday morning (0530 hours IST) as a result of yesterday’s upper air cyclonic circulation over the North Andaman Sea and the adjacent east-central and southeast Bay of Bengal. It is quite likely to go west-northwestward, strengthening by October 22 morning into a depression, and by October 23 over the east-central Bay of Bengal, becoming a cyclonic storm. After that, it is most expected to continue northwest, arriving by October 24 morning off the shores of West Bengal and Odisha in the northwest Bay of Bengal.

According to Mritunjaya Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), October 24 and 25 are extremely important days with potential wind speeds of up to 120 kmph. It is anticipated that the low pressure system will strengthen into a powerful cyclonic storm. In addition, Mohapatra has issued a warning about the impending high tides. Odisha is expected to get rain starting on October 23 due to the storm’s influence. In ten districts of Odisha, a yellow alert for heavy rain was issued on October 23 and 24. The districts of Ganjam, Khurda, Puri, and Jagatsinghpur are experiencing heavy to extremely heavy rains, according to an IMD red alert. Similarly, the regional weather center has issued an orange warning in five districts and yellow warning in 12 districts.
