Iran Urges Restraint Amid India-Pakistan Standoff Following Pahalgam Attack

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called for de-escalation between India and Pakistan, urging both nations to exercise restraint amid rising tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack.

Araghchi arrived in Islamabad on Monday for a one-day visit, where he met with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar to discuss the evolving regional situation. During their conversation, Araghchi emphasized Iran’s commitment to regional stability and expressed willingness to mediate between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

The visit comes amid heightened tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad, following a deadly attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir. India has accused Pakistan-based militant groups of orchestrating the attack, while Islamabad has denied involvement, claiming it has credible intelligence that India intends to launch military action.

Speaking to reporters upon arrival, Araghchi stated, “We seek de-escalation and urge all parties to exercise restraint and avoid increasing tensions.” He reiterated Iran’s strong diplomatic ties with both India and Pakistan and expressed hope that dialogue would prevent further escalation.

The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, also voiced concern over the situation, urging both nations to pursue dialogue instead of confrontation. Meanwhile, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke with Pakistan’s leadership, stressing the importance of diplomacy in resolving the crisis.
