In North Bengal, a storm surge caused more than 100 injuries, including five
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that the number of fatalities from the storm that caused havoc in some areas of the Jalpaiguri district in northern West Bengal has increased to five. Strong winds and hailstorms that hit much of the district headquarters town and many portions of neighboring Mainaguri on Sunday resulted in over 100 injuries, numerous damaged hutments and houses, uprooted trees, and falling electric poles. Arriving in the district late on Sunday night, the chief minister gave the people assurances that the administration will support them in every way.”Five fatalities have been reported thus far. There are a significant number of injuries. I spoke with the relatives of those who perished in the storm as well as the injured.
Mamata Banerjee stated that the rescue effort had come to an end. She visited Jalpaiguri Medical College and Hospital with TMC party leaders in tow. While there, she made video calls to people in relief camps located throughout the districts. According to officials, numerous acres of agricultural land and crops were damaged in the district, with Rajarhat, Barnish, Bakali, Jorpakdi, Madhabdanga, and Saptibari among the most impacted locations. Early on Monday morning, Bengal’s northern districts were the destination of Governor C V Ananda Bose as well. “This is really regrettable. The storm is causing fatalities. Every agency is collaborating with one another. I’m going to be in the neighborhood and will talk to locals. All will be completed,” Bose said reporters.
After expressing his condolences for the deaths caused by the storm, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he had spoken with officials and instructed them to make sure people affected by it received the help they needed. “Helpdesks have been set up and a disaster response team has been deployed,” a top Jalpaiguri district official stated.
Still, another official noted that the districts of Cooch Behar and Alipurduar had suffered relatively little damage. Nirmal Chandra Roy, the MLA for Dhupguri, informed PTI that multiple patients had been admitted to the hospital with injuries.
In response to the circumstances in Jalpaiguri, an emergency cell has also been established in the Raj Bhavan, according to officials. An official announcement claims that the governor has asked the disaster management body in Delhi to expeditiously send additional personnel and supplies to Jalpaiguri.
