PORT BLAIR, Sept 8 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, forecasting heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on September 10 and 11. The advisory warns of isolated heavy showers, with rainfall expected to range between 7–11 cm at one or two locations across the islands.
The alert is part of a broader weather bulletin covering East and Central India, where similar conditions are expected in regions such as Odisha, East Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh during the same period. The IMD has advised residents and local authorities in the Andaman Islands to remain vigilant, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Strong surface winds and moderate to heavy cloud cover are likely to accompany the rainfall, potentially disrupting ferry services, local transport, and outdoor activities. Fishermen and coastal dwellers have been cautioned against venturing into the sea during the alert period.
Local disaster management teams have been placed on standby, and district administrations are monitoring the situation closely. Tourists visiting the islands are advised to check weather updates and follow safety instructions issued by local authorities.
