IMD Issues Alert for Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms in Andaman; Fishermen Urged to Stay Ashore

September 23, 2025 Port Blair — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory warning of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across the Andaman Islands over the next 48 hours. The alert comes amid a developing low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify and bring unstable weather conditions to the region.

According to IMD officials, moderate to heavy showers accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are likely to affect several parts of North, Middle, and South Andaman districts. Coastal areas may experience wind speeds reaching up to 50 km/h, posing risks to small vessels and fishing operations.

In light of the forecast, local authorities have advised fishermen and small boat operators to avoid venturing into the sea until conditions stabilize. Port operations have also been placed on precautionary standby, and disaster management teams have been alerted.

Residents are urged to remain indoors during peak storm hours and to follow updates from official channels. Emergency services have been instructed to remain on high alert, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone zones.

The IMD will continue to monitor the system and issue updates as necessary. Travelers and tourists in the region are advised to check weather bulletins before planning any outdoor activities.
