Government imposes 40% export duty on onion from today

The government on Friday imposed 40 percent duty on onion export. It also exempted duty on import of desi chana till March 31, 2025.

Additionally, it has extended duty exemption on imports of yellow peas covered by bills of entry issued on or before October 31, 2024.
The Finance Ministry said in a notification that the changes will be effective from May 4.

At the present time there is a forbid on export of onion. However, the government allows shipments to India’s friendly countries. It has allowed a certain quantity of onion export to UAE and Bangladesh. In August previous year, India had imposed 40 % export duty on onion till December 31, 2023.
