A political war of words has erupted between Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, with Gogoi questioning Sarma’s failure to provide evidence supporting his claims that Gogoi has links to Pakistan’s ISI.
Speaking at an event in Majuli, Gogoi dismissed the allegations as baseless, stating that Sarma’s inability to present proof was a sign of weakness. The Congress leader further remarked that the delay in providing evidence would erode public trust in the chief minister’s statements.
Sarma had previously alleged that Gogoi had visited Pakistan, received training from ISI, and worked closely with the neighboring country’s establishment. Gogoi countered these claims by pointing out that many senior BJP leaders had also visited Pakistan in the past. He emphasized that the central government was fully aware of his travel history and dismissed the accusations as politically motivated propaganda.
The controversy intensified after Sarma announced that proof of Gogoi’s alleged Pakistan links would be presented to the public by September 10. Gogoi mocked this statement, comparing it to a movie release date, and sarcastically asked whether the public was watching Singham 1 or Singham 2.
Meanwhile, Gogoi also accused the BJP and its allies of using intimidation tactics during the recently held panchayat elections, alleging that voters were threatened with the withdrawal of government schemes if they did not support BJP candidates.
