From Looms to Labels: Kochi’s Fashion Boom Marks 25 Years of Creative Resurgence

Kochi’s fashion industry has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past 25 years, evolving from a modest hub of handloom weaving into a thriving ecosystem of designer labels, boutique studios, and pan-Indian influence. The journey, rooted in resilience and community collaboration, has positioned the city as a rising force in India’s fashion landscape.

The turning point came in 2018, following devastating floods that impacted the weavers of Chendamangalam. With Onam stock damaged and sales halted, Kochi-based designer Shalini James of the label Mantra issued a heartfelt plea on social media to support the weavers. The response was swift and collective—local designers rallied to promote and sell salvageable stock, drawing national attention to Kerala handloom and catalyzing a movement that continues to shape the industry today.

Another milestone was the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, which brought international and domestic tourists to Fort Kochi. Alongside art, fashion found a new audience, and Fort Kochi emerged as a retail destination for city-based and visiting designers alike. This cultural convergence helped redefine Kochi’s fashion identity—from boutique tailoring to full-fledged designer branding.

Today, Kochi is home to a diverse array of fashion labels across garments, accessories, jewellery, and lifestyle products. Notable names include Rouka by Sreejith Jeevan, Inkpikle, Mantra, Jebsispar, Annahmol, House of Urmi, Trumpet by Vanessa Meister, and Cocopalm. These brands have dressed celebrities and A-listers, expanding their reach beyond regional borders.

The bridal and wedding fashion segment has also seen exponential growth, with labels such as Pranaah, Label M, Briella, Pallavi Namdev, Kim, and Thunnal becoming go-to choices for custom trousseau design. The shift from mass-market retail to personalized couture reflects changing consumer preferences and rising aspirations.

Kochi’s fashion boom is not just about garments—it’s a reflection of the city’s cultural evolution, entrepreneurial spirit, and creative synergy. From flood-hit looms to high-end labels, the journey underscores how community-driven innovation can redefine an industry.
