From goalpost to forward line: Four juniors who could reshape India’s senior hockey lineup

The 2025 men’s FIH Junior World Cup, in which India secured a bronze medal, highlighted several promising young players who may advance to senior teams. This document examines four potential candidates for transition to the main squad in the near future.

The No 16, initially a defender, has transitioned to goalkeeping and is now a serious contender for the national team, spurred by PR Sreejesh’s influence. With Krishan Pathak’s recent form lacking confidence, head coach Craig Fulton faces challenges selecting the squad for upcoming Pro League matches in February, particularly after evaluating Pawan’s performance at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup and Princedeep’s strong showing at the JWC. Additionally, India’s goalkeeping options are bolstered by Mohith HS and Bikramjit Singh. Princedeep has honed his skills with Sreejesh’s guidance, showcasing strong performances in Madurai and Chennai.

India’s defenders made notable contributions to the team’s scoring, highlighted by Sharda Nand Tiwari’s five goals and crucial penalty shootout performance against Belgium. Anmol Ekka and Rohit added four and two goals, respectively, with Anmol being named player of the match for his pivotal drag flicks. Additionally, Priyobarta demonstrated versatile defensive skills, effectively playing various positions and facilitating play with accurate aerial and ground passes, notably assisting in India’s standout goal.

India’s midfield proved to be a major concern during the tournament, lacking a central driving force. However, Manmeet Singh emerged as a significant long-term prospect by scoring six goals, making him the team’s leading goalscorer. His contributions to the attack were notable, though he needs to improve on making the right passes in the final third. With his strong physique and excellent stick skills, Manmeet, who aspires to emulate Hardik Singh, is a talent worth investing in.

In Sreejesh’s 4-4-2 formation, Arshdeep Singh excelled, significantly boosting his reputation. Despite challenges against Germany’s robust defense, he shone in the final quarter against Argentina, contributing to India’s comeback by creating two Penalty Corners and a Penalty Stroke that led to their first three goals. Although he has made his senior debut and is known for creating attacking opportunities, Arshdeep recognizes the need to enhance his goal-scoring abilities and has been refining his finishing skills, making him a potential asset for the senior squad.
