Foxconn Eyes Uttar Pradesh for New Electronics Manufacturing Hub

The Uttar Pradesh government and Foxconn, the world’s largest electronics manufacturer and a key supplier for Apple, are in discussions to establish a major electronics manufacturing unit in the state. This development aligns with India’s growing prominence as a global hub for electronics production and exports.

Foxconn is exploring a 300-acre site along the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida, under the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA). This facility would mark Foxconn’s first manufacturing unit in northern India and could potentially be larger than its upcoming plant in Bengaluru. The proposed site benefits from strategic connectivity, being near the upcoming Jewar airport and major expressways in the National Capital Region (NCR).

The Uttar Pradesh government has already allocated 48 acres of land for the HCL-Foxconn joint venture, which aims to set up an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility. This project is expected to create around 4,000 jobs and represents an initial investment of ₹3,706 crore. The discussions with Foxconn for the new manufacturing unit are at an early stage, and the specific products to be manufactured have not yet been finalized.

Foxconn’s expansion in India is part of its broader strategy to diversify its manufacturing base amid global supply chain realignments and geopolitical uncertainties. The company is looking to move beyond smartphone production into sectors like electric vehicles (EVs), digital health, and information and communication technology. Foxconn’s chairman, Young Liu, has emphasized the company’s intent to deepen its manufacturing presence in India and move up the value chain.

India’s mobile phone production has seen significant growth, with exports crossing ₹2 lakh crore in the fiscal year 2024-25, a 55% increase from the previous year. Foxconn alone accounted for ₹1.5 lakh crore worth of exports in the smartphone segment. Uttar Pradesh, home to production units of major brands like Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, Dixon, and Lava, contributes over 80% of India’s smartphone market share.

The proposed manufacturing unit in Uttar Pradesh is expected to further boost India’s electronics exports and create substantial employment opportunities. It reflects the state’s commitment to fostering industrial growth and attracting global investments.
