Former world No. 3 Milos Raonic says goodbye to international tennis

Milos Raonic, a former world number three and eight-time ATP champion, announced his retirement, capping a nearly two-decade career. The 35-year-old Canadian, who has long battled ailments, hasn’t played professionally for almost a year. “I’m retiring from tennis because the time has come. You know this day will arrive, yet for some reason you never feel prepared for it. I’m as prepared as I will ever be. For the most of my life, tennis has been my passion and obsession,” Raonic wrote on X.

“Being able to live out and achieve my dreams has made me the luckiest person. I had the opportunity to show up every day and concentrate on simply improving, seeing where that would lead, and playing a game that, by pure happenstance, I was first introduced to when I was eight years old. This somehow became my childhood interest, my career, and my entire existence,” he continued. Over his career, the Canadian tennis player won eight trophies at the tour level. His best season was in 2016, when he defeated Roger Federer in the semi-finals to go to the Wimbledon final.

He made it to the Indian Wells final, advanced to the Australian Open and ATP Finals semifinals, and ended the season at a career-high No. 3. His most recent appearance came at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, where Dominik Koepfer defeated him 7-6(2), 6-7(5), and 6-7(1) in the opening round. “I am grateful to my coaches and team for taking time away from their homes and families to travel with me while I seek my dreams and objectives. I am appreciative of your advice and lessons,” he continued.
