Drug abuse and de-addiction awareness program held at Andaman Law College
On December 12, 2024, the Andaman & Nicobar State Legal Services Authority, in partnership with Andaman Law College, Sri Vijaya Puram, hosted a legal awareness program on “Drug Abuse and De-Addiction” on the college’s campus. Judges Amrita Sinha and Uday Kumar, both of whom are members of the High Court of Calcutta, graced the occasion. Hon. Justice Amrita Sinha emphasized the detrimental effects of drug misuse on both people and society in her speech to the assembly. She urged students to actively participate in raising awareness of this important issue by illuminating the legal repercussions of drug-related offenses under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The important role that awareness and education play in reducing drug usage was discussed by Hon. Justice Uday Kumar. He underlined the importance of early intervention and increased community participation in efforts to combat addiction. Insightful remarks were made by Mr. Bhawani Shanker Sharma, Member Secretary of the Andaman & Nicobar State Legal Services Authority and Registrar at the Circuit Bench of the Calcutta High Court in Port Blair. In order to encourage students to actively participate in the conversation, Mr. Sharma also led an interactive session.
Ms. Arkabrati Neogi, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Port Blair; Mr. Jayanta Mukherjee, Judicial Magistrate, Campbell Bay; Mr. Anupam Sircar, Judicial Magistrate, 2nd Court, Port Blair; Mr. Sudhir Kumar, District Judge, A&N Islands; and Mr. Neyaz Alam, Additional District Judge, Port Blair were among the dignitaries who attended the event.
