CITU Hosts Zonal Meets in Andaman Regions

The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) conducted its Zonal Conferences in Mayabunder and Kadamtala–Baratang on 7 December 2025, drawing participation from workers representing various affiliated unions.

At the Mayabunder conference, CITU State Committee Vice President D. Ayyappan inaugurated the session and outlined concerns regarding the Central government’s four Labour Codes enacted in 2019 and 2020. He stated that the new framework could affect several benefits and rights previously available to workers. He urged workers in the islands to express their views on the laws. CITU State Committee Secretary P.K. Khalid stressed the need to strengthen trade unions in the region.

The event, presided over by Ramesh Pradhan, saw participation from a large number of workers from unions active in the Mayabunder area. The conference elected a new Zonal Committee with Subramanian as President, Murugan as Secretary, Mohammed Javed as Joint Secretary and S. Rajesh as Treasurer.

On the same day, the Kadamtala–Baratang Zonal Conference was held at the Forest Club, Nilambur. CITU State Committee General Secretary B. Chandrachoodan inaugurated the meeting and highlighted the significance of the upcoming State Conference in Port Blair on 20–21 December 2025. He also recalled past labour struggles in Baratang, including demands related to pay and allowances for Daily Rated Mazdoors.

CITU representatives Daniel Aint, Anand Raj and Shipra Bala addressed the gathering. The event began with a workers’ procession in Nilambur and was attended by several unions from the Kadamtala and Baratang areas.
