CISF to Secure Mizoram’s Lengpui Airport from April 24 in Counter-Terrorism Move

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will assume security responsibilities at Lengpui Airport, Mizoram’s only airport, starting April 24. This marks the 69th airport under CISF’s counter-terrorism cover and the first in the northeastern state to receive protection from the paramilitary force.
Lengpui Airport, located 35 km north of Aizawl in Mamit district, was the first airport in India built by a state government, according to the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Previously, security at the airport was managed by a joint team of the Mizoram Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). With the CISF taking charge, security measures will be significantly strengthened.
The CISF has a special aviation security group (ASG) that provides counter-terrorism and anti-sabotage protection to airports across India. At Lengpui Airport, CISF personnel.
In January 2024, a Myanmarese military cargo plane carrying 14 crew members crash-landed at Lengpui Airport after overshooting the table-top runway. Fortunately, there were no casualties. Mizoram shares a 510-km border with Myanmar, making security at the airport crucial.
The Centre’s decision to deploy CISF personnel at Lengpui Airport aligns with its broader strategy to enhance aviation security across India. The move is expected to bolster safety measures and improve counter-terrorism preparedness in the region.
